Background and Purpose of the Study
One of the most lacking areas in veterinary medicine is the ability to diagnose early dementia in dogs and cats. Our team is working diligently on creating simple blood tests that we hope will be able to fulfill this need but first, we need to be able to correlate the blood tests with levels of protein found in the brain. By collecting samples from dogs and cats who have recently passed away, we’re able to compare these blood protein levels to those of the levels in the brain itself, which should allow us to develop this test in live animals. Our hope is that we will ultimately be able to diagnose early dementia in dogs and cats before symptoms develop, allowing us to better treat the pet to give them more quality time with their family.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the euthanasia be performed at home?
- If you live within 30 minutes of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, the euthanasia can be performed at home but it is essential that you or someone else you trust is able to bring your pet to the VTH immediately following the euthanasia.
Can I have an autopsy performed still?
- Yes, you can absolutely still have an autopsy performed to determine the cause of death. This is not a requirement of the study and is completely optional.
Can I still have my pet’s ashes returned to me?
- Yes! The VTH works with either Precious Memories Pet Crematorium or Guardian Pets Aquamation and you have the option to choose which one you would prefer. Ashes are generally returned to you within 1-2 weeks. You will be responsible for the cost of the cremation and the crematorium will contact you directly for payment.
