Congratulations to Dr. Jenny Sones and the Sones laboratory on her $3 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01 grant award!

This grant will allow us to research how maternal obesity with hyperphagia contributes to the risk of preeclampsia, pregnancy hypertension, and cardiometabolic disease in offspring. The Sones laboratory focuses on the basic mechanisms of pregnancy. The interaction of the microbiome, inflammation, and pre-existing conditions, such as obesity, and their on impact fertility. We seek to improve reproductive success of both humans and horses.

Dr. Sones earned her D.V.M. from Louisiana State University and a Ph.D. in reproductive physiology and genomics from Cornell University. She is a clinician who also studies pregnancy maintenance mechanisms in horses and mice for translational biomedical research. The NIH is the largest public funder of biomedical research in the world, investing more than $32 billion a year to enhance life, and reduce illness and disability. NIH funded research has led to breakthroughs and new treatments, helping people live longer, healthier lives, and building the research foundation that drives discovery.
